What does autistic child mean
This delay means that children with ASD might not get the early help they need. There is currently no cure for ASD. Services can include therapy to help the child talk, walk, and interact with others.
Even if your child has not been diagnosed with an ASD, he or she may be eligible for early intervention treatment services. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA external icon says that children under the age of 3 years 36 months who are at risk of having developmental delays may be eligible for services. These services are provided through an early intervention system in your state.
Through this system, you can ask for an evaluation. In addition, treatment for particular symptoms, such as speech therapy for language delays, often does not need to wait for a formal ASD diagnosis. We do not know all of the causes of ASD. However, we have learned that there are likely many causes for multiple types of ASD. There may be many different factors that make a child more likely to have an ASD, including environmental, biologic and genetic factors.
There is no cure for autism, but treatment can make a big difference. The younger kids are when they start treatment, the better. Doctors, therapists, and special education teachers can help kids learn to talk, play, and learn. Therapists also help kids learn about making friends, taking turns, and getting along.
Some people with ASD do not feel that they have a disorder and don't want to change. They're proud of who they are and they want to be accepted, even though they may have different strengths and weaknesses than most other people. All people deserve respect. But kids with ASD may be teased, bullied , or left out because they're different.
Always stay positive. Children with ASD respond best to positive reinforcement. Be sure to talk about or reward good behavior often. Ignore irritating attention-getting behavior. A child with ASD may act badly at times to get you to focus on them. Ignoring this behavior is often the best way to prevent it.
Also talk about and reward the child's good behavior often. Interact through physical activity. Children with ASD tend to have short attention spans. This is especially true when it comes to communicating. Running around and playing outside may be a better way of sharing time together.
It will also let them relax and feel calmer. Be affectionate and respectful. Children with ASD often need a hug, just like other children. Sometimes they need this much more than other children. But some children don't like to be touched. Respect their personal space. Never force physical affection on an unwilling child. Like everyone, autistic people have things they're good at as well as things they struggle with.
Being autistic does not mean you can never make friends, have relationships or get a job. But you might need extra help with these things. Some autistic people need little or no support. Others may need help from a parent or carer every day. Unlike some people with autism, people with Asperger's do not have a learning disability.
But if you were diagnosed with it before, this will stay as your diagnosis.
