When was chatty cathy made

She looks like she never came on that body and she didn't, at least not on the 2 is my thinking. But and as far as I can tell the soft head pigtails did, so that is why people think the hard head pigtail dolls should of also came on those 2 bodies when I am almost sure they didn't. But anything is possible with these dolls. Mattel was mass-producing the dolls so they had to use up all the doll part.

I think in the end all the doll part were used up, meaning all the bodies were used up and so where the heads and limbs. They would not of just tossed out those left over parts. Oh, I am sure they did some but in any business where you mass-produce something you are not going to just throw out perfectly good parts. You are going to use them up where you can. Maybe not the body so much as it could have been melted again easily but the heads and limbs would have been used up.

So 4 and 5 dolls can be found with all the different heads including soft head bobs, hard head Paige boys and soft and hard head pigtails. Plus the limbs too from brown to white, to nice and pink. I also know that Mattel shipped eyes to Canada, that is why you will see the blue decal eyes in Canadian dolls but why not the brown decal? I don't know. Plus Mattel did use the glassine eyes in the Chatty Cathy dolls and in the Tinny Chatty baby and they are the same eyes as in the glassine eyes in the Canadian Chatty Cathy dolls.

So Mattel either got them from Canada or shipped them to Canada. Ether way they were used a lot in both American and Canadian dolls. In the American dolls they are mostly see in the blond pigtail soft head. I have seen them in the hard head blondes and in a brunette Paige boy hard head on the video. Which brings me to the pinwheel eyes in the American dolls. I now think they were used maybe but I am still on the edge with that one, what bothers me is I had a doll with the pinwheel eyes but my stupidity made me cut those eyes out of the head.

Now my thinking is yes, maybe some were used but they were too big for the hard head and after the head shrunk up that eye bulged out and would not close up right, so the idea of using the pinwheel eye in a hard head was trashed. Different things were tried some worked and some didn't. So my time line is as follows and please remember this is my educated guess.

Those first record sayings are on the front of the first boxes. Doll 0 Also in late the doll was now stamped and in early the second record was made.

Doll 1 Then the cloth cover was removed from the front of the speaker. Doll 2 And the first 3 bodies were made. Doll 3 Also in the hard head Paige boy came out as did the Chatty Baby doll and later that same year the redhead and soft heads pigtail doll and the BRUN and the BLON words was now removed from the second record.

But here is also where Mattel was using up the early bodies and was using the record in those bodies. Because you have to remember that 0- 2 bodies are all the same inside and that body had to be used up. It was mass-produced probably more bodies than they had records for or vice versa depending on where the doll was made. By the time Mattel stopped production on the doll what was left over in parts would had to be used up, Hence all the different heads were used on these two bodies 4 and 5.

Time Line and Summing-Up below Blonde bobs blue eyes Brunette bobs brown eyes Blonde bobs brown eyes Hard head Paige Boy blondes blue eyes and brunette with blue or brown eyes. This is also when Mattel started using the Glassine eyes.

Also if the pinwheel eye was ever added to the doll it would have been now, but I am still so unsure about that and I have only ever had one doll that I think was original with green pinwheel eyes. So I am still unwilling to go out on a limb and say that the pinwheel eyes were ever used in the American Chatty Cathy doll.

But I am sure the Glassine eye was used. Soft head pigtails blonde, brunette, redheads with blue and brown and glassine eyes. Hard head pigtails blonde, brunette and redheads with blue brown and glassine eyes. The dolls that are seen the most below. This is an unrealistic list of the dolls that you see the most and for some odd reason any doll that doesn't fit the description below doesn't belong or some think is a very rare doll.

When the truth is When I read things like that, I think, "That is such a ridiculous statement"! The built in phonograph turntable allowed Chatty Cathy to say a phrase that are suppose to be completely random when ever the pull-string with the white plastic ring on the end was pulled by the owner. The internal phonograph system consisted of a record needle, a very small turntable, and the record itself with all of Chatty Cathy's comments recorded in the groves.

There are speaker holes on the vinyl chest of Chatty Cathy dolls, with flesh color grill cloth over the holes on the early models. This hole setup act as a speaker for the sound of the words to come out clearly from the phonograph record. Tragically over the span of years, the rubber governor belt grows brittle from age and breaks, rendering Chatty mute because the ingenuous Mattel phonograph system becomes nonfunctional due to the broken governor belt.

Original red velvet Chatty shoes have some wear, the toe bows are a little faded. Bing a tasteful doll from she came also with a matching red pinafore, and an overskirt of white voile. Needless to say her red shoes matched the exact color of her sun suit and she had starched white socks that kept their shape. Here is the Mattel Talking Chatty Cathy doll. There are no hard faced brown eyed Chattys that are Mattel originals.

They only put brown eyes in the soft faced bobs and in the brunettes. I have seen a few brown eyed soft faced blonde bobs but they are super rare. If you see one be wary. Mattel may have put brown eyes in the soft faced pigtails, although I have never seen an Mattel original brown eyed pigtail from America.

This now leads us to the often confusing, Canadian model. The Canadian Chattys are always soft faced, and have either pinwheel, glassine eyes or decal eyes. While they did make the decal eyed Canadian, she has different a eye color and a different decal eye than the American Chattys have.

The decal eye like I mentioned earlier, is what American Chatty Cathy dolls eyes are called. It is a decal of an eye under a hard plastic lens. When you look at an original Canadian decal eye next to the American version, can see a difference between the decal as well as the dolls coloring. You will know your doll is an original made Canadian by the slightly larger freckles, which are in a very distinct figure eight pattern. This is unlike the American models, which have more of a thin sprinkling of freckles across the upper cheek American Chatty's but these are not in as a distinct figure eight pattern, across the nose and upper cheek.

There is a faint hint of a figure eight pattern on the American model but it is more sprinkled across and not such a distinct figure eight, like the Canadian models have. They also have more distinct eye liner and shiny lip color, unlike the American Chatty's where the lip color is a matte finish with no sheen to it.

The Canadian Chattys also have a higher arched eyebrows. Lastly, are the eye differences of the Canadian models. Most notable are the "glassine" or "pinwheel" eye types. I will put photos up soon for you to see the difference between them. Where allot of the confusion comes in, is the fact that they also made a "decal eyed" Canadians.

The Canadian decal eyes have a darker blue color and have a more distinct black ring around the iris and a deeper blue to the eye color. It can vary depending on whether the dolls eyes have been exposed to water or humidity etc. They can discolor. The Canadian Chattys have sable lashes instead of the harder one piece plastic that the American Chatty's have. These are individual sable eyelashes.

They have a more realistic look and feel to them than the American Chatty Cathy dolls have. These are the norms. You will run across anomalies or ones that may have been altered by someone.

Doll sellers might do this to make a doll appear rare when in fact she is not or, someone has made a "one of a kind" Chatty and is selling her as their rendition of a Chatty or a one of a kind "OOAK" doll.. There is a lot of misinformation out there especially on the web. All this information I have provided, is what is "typical" and is not intended as absolute information. This is what I know that was created, manufactured, and produced by Mattel Corp. There are some strange or different Chatty's that were made by Mattel. In fact I happen to own a few of these Chatty "anomalies". For example, one of my dolls, has the the strangest "original" eye color I've ever seen on any Chatty anywhere that are original that is.

I purchased her years prior to the now often seen practice, of people frontally inserting strange eye colors into our beloved dolls. This was also prior to, folks doing the host of other things they do to dolls to fool buyers and collectors.

Additionally, I purchased her from a "Chatty Pal" who is I knew and is a reputable and avid collector of our beloved doll. I trust her completely. She would never changed out eyes nor buy one that had the eyes swapped.

However, because I'm naturally curious and now suspicious of strange eye colors in Chatty, I just had her eyes checked three times for authenticity.

And I just sent her to a voice repairman who has been repairing and selling Chattys for over 25 years. I had him triple check her eyes to see if they are truly original eyes put in by Mattel. They are indeed original eyes. I would still be wary as to her authenticity if she was a soft faced Chatty.

It would be near impossible to insert eyes into this particular doll without me being able to detect it. Originally, Chatty Cathy had blonde hair and blue eyes. Brunette and auburn-haired versions of the doll were introduced in and respectively; an African American version of the doll with brown skin tones was produced those same years.

In , two outfits were available for the doll: one included a blue dress with a white eyelet overblouse, panties, crinoline, blue shoes and white socks, and the other included a red velvet headband, red sunsuit with a red pinafore with an overskirt of white voile, red shoes and white socks.

Chatty Cathy was on the market for six years and was the second most popular doll of the s after Barbie also made by Mattel. The last doll to have the word chatty in its name in the '60s was Singin' Chatty in By the company was known as Mattel Canada.

The dolls were made from the original American molds, but there was a notable difference in the materials: the vinyl used on the Canadian doll had a glossier look, its eyebrows were higher on its forehead, and a different type of eye was used in the doll. These differences account for the higher prices of some Canadian Chattys among collectors.

Some of the doll's phrases were different, reflecting cultural differences between Canada and the United States. These differences also made the doll suitable for export to other English-speaking countries. Mattel also bought the Rosebud doll company in England in and made a British Chatty Cathy that was on the market into the s.
