What do mormons believe about immaculate conception

Some of these comments may have been collected from someone that is trying to imply that Mormons won't tell you about these things. This is partially accurate simply because we don't actually believe in many of these things. On a similar note, I have pulled some of this information from several "campaigns" which claim that they just want to help us Mormons realize the error of our ways.

However, most of these campaigns are not actually targeted to Mormons. They are targeted to those who are not Mormon and may be curious about what we really believe. In war and politics it is known as a "disinformation" campaign and it's used to keep other people in the dark or doubtful of factual information.

If these campaigns were intended to target Mormons, they would talk to us directly, instead of referring to Mormons in the third person as "they," and they would use our real teachings to try and convince us of our error. You may notice that after the first sentence, these descriptions are written in a way so that anyone can quote them if they need to. The disadvantage to this is that there are some things that get repeated in the explanations more than once.

It should be noted that this site is not an official source for Mormon doctrine, so if you're going to quote from this site I would recommend that you point out the sources or link back to this page so readers can verify accurate sources for themselves. I have also bolded some things in each statement to help identify the key points. Speaking of repeating stuff, this introduction is fairly standard on the other fact and myth pages so you can probably skip it on the next one without missing much.

Link to the main Mormon fact and myth page. Mormons believe Christ was conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost. Both the Bible and the Book of Mormon state that Christ was conceived this way. Mormons believe that Mary was a virgin when she conceived and gave birth to Christ. Mormons do not pray to Mary and do not view Mary as the intercessor with her son on behalf of those who pray to her.

Latter-day saints direct their prayers to God the Father. All manner of assisted reproductive technologies would look like miracles to anyone born before the turn of the 20th century, just as cloning would have looked like a miracle to us before Dolly the sheep. In our modern understanding, we should appreciate that fathering a child is not necessarily the same thing as having sex with the child's mother, finally offering an alternative explanation to sex or mystery.

While the church still declares no official explanation as to the manner of conception, scientific advancement allows us somewhere else to place our mysteries, allowing us to continue to venerate Mary and the miracle of the virgin birth, despite the other differences in Christian ideologies. Personally, Mary has significance to me far beyond other women in our scriptures.

She is the closest avatar we have to our heavenly mother, and proof of the love and care Christ had towards the women of his day. In stark contrast to how religions have treated women throughout time, her life shows that God knows women are powerful enough to bring forth his most mighty miracles. This article is more than 10 years old. Tresa Edmunds. Many Christians will be marking today as the birthday of Mary, mother of Jesus.

By a unique grace, Mary was preserved from the stain of original sin, inheriting human nature without taint in order that she be a suitable mother for Jesus. This teaching was defined as obligatory dogma by Pope Pius IX in Latter-day Saints accept neither the above doctrine of original sin nor the need for Mary's immaculate conception MD , p.

Instead, they "believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression" A of F 2 , because Jesus' Atonement redeems all, including Mary, from the responsibility for Adam's trespass Moro. New York, That's anti-mormon claptrap. Some mormons have speculated about the process, and some of those speculators have held leadership callings at the time. But no, we don't teach that. The missionaries got this one right - about all we know not guess, not opine about, not have evidence for, but Know with a capitol "K" about the process comes from scripture.

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed artthou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throneof his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. One thing that sets us apart from Catholics, is they believe Mary remained a virgin for all her life, and we don't see any reason to believe that.

As NeuroTypical so eloquently said "that's anti-Mormon claptrap". Again-- no does that does not mean they had sex see 1. Even us tiny humans can have a baby conceived without sex being involved, let alone the infinitely powerful God. Note: None of this is the Immaculate Conception. Many people believe that God the Father is not really a Father in any literal sense. We do. The angel Gabriel told Mary what would happen to her, and that she would be the mother of the Savior.

But the words recorded in the Bible are confusing:. Somehow the reality of the parentage, or better, Parentage, of Christ got muddled. It was to clarify this to assure us that God the Father is, indeed, the Father of the Redeemer of the world, and that Jesus is not the Son of the Holy Ghost that we have the statements hinting of a literal, ordinary conception.

Your hypothesis, that Mary committed adultery, is not correct based on Jewish Law. So the unmarried could not commit "adultery". The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia gives us:. In Scripture [adultery] designates sexual intercourse of a man, whether married or unmarried, with a married woman. So, Mary, being unmarried, was not an adulteress, nor would God have been an adulterer even if their union had literally been carnal. To be clear the Catholic doctrine of Immaculate Conception is the notion that Mary was conceived and born without sin, making her worthy to carry the Son of God.

It is not about the virgin birth of Christ. Carry on. Mary is, according to Catholic Dogma, "the Immaculate Conception". She was not guilty of the Transgression of Adam, or "original sin". How is unexplained, but we need not defend Catholic teachings. Just in case "espoused" is contributing to the doubt about adultery, "espoused" is similar to what we might think of as "engaged" though more culturally binding, from my understanding, than we tend to think "engaged" is.

So when it says Mary was espoused to Joseph, no, she was not already married. No it is not. At least every quote from a leader that ive seen that states natural along with the term God, never said that god did it the natural way. Let me guess and say youre thinking of mormon doctrine by McConkie?
